if I wanted to sew this without the zipper, how would you suggest I do it?

I made the tote bag and I added foam stabilizer and quilted this on top and bottom fabrics. It came out great, but too small. I am going to make another bag with bigger dimensions.

Can I ask why the cut outs are half a cm different on one edge please? The pattern shows one edge cutouts are 3.5cm x 3.5cm but the opposite edge they're 3cm x 3.5cm. I just would like to understand why 😊
